Cotswold: A Country Side Bliss
On 27th March 2026, I traveled from Oxford to the enchanting Cotswolds. I boarded a train at Oxford Rail Station, having booked a return ticket via the Trainline app for approximately £14. My train to Moreton-in-Marsh departed promptly at 8:45 am, and I arrived at my destination by 9:15 am. The Cotswolds, with its rolling hills and idyllic villages, proved every bit as picturesque as I imagined. From Moreton-in-Marsh, my two friends and I decided to visit the charming villages of Bibury. In hindsight, our only misstep was failing to plan our transportation in advance. We noticed a few Cotswold tour vans that offered guided tours of the villages, but these required prior booking. Ultimately, we arranged an Uber to Bibury Trout Farm, which cost £40, allowing us to continue our exploration without delay.
The Uber journey from Moreton-in-Marsh to Bibury Trout Farm took approximately thirty minutes, yet the drive itself was a delightful experience. As we travelled through the Cotswolds, the scenery gradually unfolded into a charming panorama of rolling countryside, traditional farms and centuries-old stone cottages. The landscape felt almost timeless, as though we had stepped into a historical era preserved in its natural beauty. Along the way we passed lush green fields where cows and horses grazed peacefully, adding to the pastoral charm of the region. When we finally arrived at Bibury, the village immediately impressed us with its tranquil and picturesque atmosphere. Groups of tourists from different parts of the world had gathered there, all eager to experience the charm of this iconic Cotswolds destination. Bibury resembled a luxurious countryside retreat, serene, elegant and surrounded by nature. Small cafés and traditional old-style pubs lined the village, creating a warm and inviting setting. We decided to explore the renowned Bibury Trout Farm, where the adult entry ticket cost £9. Founded in 1902, it is recognised as the oldest operational trout farm in England and occupies around fifteen acres of scenic countryside. The farm uses pure spring water to raise millions of trout each year and offers visitors a variety of activities, including feeding the fish, catching their own trout, playing crazy golf and relaxing at the onsite café.
One important piece of advice I would share with anyone planning a visit to the Cotswolds is to always check the opening hours of the attractions in advance. Many places operate on specific schedules, and planning ahead can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience.
After exploring Bibury Trout Farm, we decided to continue our journey to another well known village in the Cotswolds, the charming Bourton-on-the-Water. This time, we opted for public transport and opted 855 bus from Bibury, which travelled directly to Bourton-on-the-Water. A single ticket cost £3, and the journey took approximately 40 to 45 minutes. Upon arrival, we were immediately captivated by the village’s remarkable beauty and tranquil atmosphere. Bourton-on-the-Water is widely regarded as one of the most picturesque destinations in the Cotswolds and is often referred to as the “Venice of the Cotswolds” because the gentle River Windrush flows through the centre of the village, crossed by a series of elegant, low stone bridges that add to its distinctive charm. While exploring the village, we visited a unique attraction known as The Model Village, where the adult ticket cost approximately £4.50–£5. This fascinating exhibit is a meticulously crafted miniature replica of Bourton-on-the-Water itself, recreated with remarkable precision and intricate architectural details. Walking through the model village felt almost surreal; the tiny cottages, bridges, and streets were built at such a scale that visitors felt like giants wandering through a perfectly preserved miniature world. The experience was both charming and unusual, taking around 20–25 minutes to explore fully. It was undoubtedly a memorable highlight of our visit and something I would highly recommend to anyone travelling to Bourton-on-the-Water.
Continuing our exploration of Bourton-on-the-Water, we next visited Birdland Park & Gardens, a well-known wildlife attraction in the village. The adult ticket cost approximately £14–£15. The park is home to more than 500 birds representing a wide range of species from around the world. As we walked through the beautifully arranged gardens and enclosures, we observed penguins waddling playfully, majestic pelicans resting near the water, colourful parrots, and several exotic bird species originating from Africa and other regions. The environment was lively yet relaxing, allowing visitors to appreciate these fascinating creatures up close. Overall, it took us around 40–45 minutes to comfortably explore the entire park.
Afterwards, we began to feel hungry and decided to stop for a quick meal at a nearby Italian restaurant called Oli Bonny Pizza. There we ordered two vegetarian Italian pizzas, which turned out to be exceptionally delicious—freshly prepared, flavourful, and very satisfying. Once we had finished eating, we spent some time wandering through the charming streets of the village before catching the 801 bus back to Moreton-in-Marsh station. Since we still had some time before our train departure, we thought of having a light snack. Craving a little Indian flavour, we came across a restaurant called The Spice Room. When we asked for a table for three, the staff informed us that there was availability. However, when we mentioned that we only wanted drinks and a few starters rather than a full meal, we were told that they did not serve only starters without ordering main courses. This policy felt rather restrictive, as it seemed that guests were expected to order a full meal regardless of their preference. Consequently, we decided to leave and look elsewhere.
Shortly afterwards, we returned to the station and boarded our train back. Despite that minor inconvenience, my overall experience visiting the Cotswolds was truly delightful and memorable. The picturesque villages, peaceful countryside, and unique attractions made the journey incredibly enjoyable and well worth the trip.
